CORFU. A New Year ‘bonus’ for 23 employees at Corfu Municipal Water Supply & Sewerage Company (DEYAK).
The Supervisory Committee judged the recruitment of the employees with open-ended contracts to be illegal because of a previous decision in 2014, which judged their dismissal to be legal. Thus, DEYAK has been forced to terminate the employment contracts they had agreed in October.
Speaking to Enimerosi, the DEYAK President, Alekos Faitas, said that the dismissal of the employees would cause problems for the company, which was already facing difficulties in operating properly. However, there is little possibility of DEYAK overturning the decision unless the employees themselves can achieve it through an appeal.
He went on to say that the recruitment of these 23 employees had been beneficial to the company’s operation as they provided essential cover for the crew shifts. To illustrate this, he said that they had only 6 employees in the sewerage system crew, and 2 of them were drivers.
Regarding the three months’ unpaid salaries, Mr. Faitis told us that DEYAK had paid two out of the three months salaries into the employees’ bank accounts. “The full amount of money due will be paid – that won’t be a problem,” he said. “The big problem is that these people are losing their jobs and the same is happening in a lot of other parts of Greece.”
