CORFU. The demand for personnel reinforcements from the workers’ union of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDIE) has been satisfied at last.

These are emergency reinforcements, necessitated by the damage caused by thunderstorms in the Lefkimmi area. Extra personnel have been sent from DEDIE in Ioannina, Igoumenitsa and Patra. According to Nikos Savvanis, secretary of the Corfu workers’ union, there are still several isolated areas throughout the island that remain without electricity.

Where has there been the greatest damage?

Mr Savvanis told us that a large cypress tree fell onto power cables in Ag. Deka on Tuesday afternoon. A repair crew has been sent there to restore electricity as soon as possible.

He also told us that the damage done in Acharavi on Monday night, which affected several of the surrounding areas, will be repaired by tonight. Due to the reinforcements, there are 3 repair crews at work every evening and so repairs will be effected more easily and quickly.

Most of the Lefkimmi area has now had its electricity restored, with only a few isolated problems on the waiting list, which will be attended to as soon as possible. Their priority remains to deal with any major damage which affects large areas.
