CORFU. The Seamen’s union, «St. Spyridon» has announced a 48-hour strike from Tuesday 31 October to Thursday 2 November with the possibility of further escalation.

The ferry boat crews on the routes Corfu-Igoumenitsa-Lefkimmi-Paxos are participating in the strike.

The union made the following statement in its press release:
“We demand the immediate abolishment of the 35-minute break which is applied exclusively on the Corfu-Igoumenitsa route. We consider it essential that there should be a 1-hour break to ensure proper rest and refreshment for the crew so that they can properly carry out their duties in the adverse conditions that exist.

We demand the signature of a 3% wage increase agreement, which we feel is justified due to the fact that the excessive increase in the prices of basic foodstuffs and in the cost of living in general has led to a decrease in the buying power of our present wages.

Crews should be given extra pay for night shift hours. There should be a written agreement not allowing split shifts at weekends and it should also be explicitly stated that the previous collective work agreement remains in force if a new one hasn’t been signed by its expiry date.

We consider it necessary that for every two ship engineers on the open-type ferry boats there should be one apprentice. The canteens on the open-type boats should have one extra employee during the summer period. We also demand a change in the law regarding both open and covered boats when they are out of service – there should be manning of the boats when they are out of service for maintenance.”

The union has called for a written response from the responsible ministers, ship owners and others in order to resolve their demands immediately.
