CORFU. Following the statement of Corfu’s deputy mayor, Nikos Anastasopoulos, on 12 June, ‘Enimerosi’ conducted research into the public toilets located in different areas of Corfu Town.

Mr. Anastasopoulos declared: “We plan to spend most of this year’s technical program budget on the restoration of public toilets. We will allocate about 40,000 Euro for the repair of toilets in San Roco Square, Central Square, Bosketo and Garitsa Park.”

Enimerosi has repeatedly attempted to contact the deputy mayor of technical services to find out about the actions of the Municipality in this regard, but to no avail.

The results of our research are as follows:

The public toilets at Garitsa have no toilet paper or hand soap. The intense stench and lack of cleanliness are obvious.

The toilets at Anemomilos, are in rather better condition. The sink, though is out of order and water is running continuously in some wash-basins.
In the central square, the toilet area is very clean. However, the air dryer is out of order and there is a lack of hand soap and toilet paper. The problem is that disabled people do not have access to the toilets, as the entrance is rusty.

In Mantouki, the public toilets are closed and abandoned. Look through the railings, you can see rubbish all around, demolished walls and damaged equipment. The area has become overgrown with grass.

The toilets in San Roco Square are also closed, and according to local business owners, a number of elderly people are forced to use the area outside the entrance because they have no choice. It should also be noted that the stench is unbearable.

The Corfu Port Authority has set up public toilets in the old port, at the exit of the car park and opposite the NASKE organization. In these places, there are also both women’s and men’s toilets for the disabled.
