Israeli ambassador to visit Corfu on Saturday
CORFU. At the invitation of the Hoteliers’ Association – Visit to the Synagogue and meeting with the Jewish Community
Israel’s new ambassador to Greece, Pninat Yanai, is expected to arrive in Corfu on Saturday morning, 17 October, at the invitation of the Hoteliers’ Association.
According to information obtained by Enimerosi, during her stay on the island the Israeli diplomat will visit the Synagogue in the town’s former Jewish Quarter, where she will meet members of Corfu’s Jewish Community. Her hosts are also expected to hold a lunch in her honour.
The full programme for the visit has not yet been made public, and it is not known whether it will include meetings with representatives of local government or other officials.
The invitation comes from the hotel sector, giving the visit a business dimension as well, although no specific discussion topics or cooperation initiatives have been announced.
The visit to the Synagogue carries particular historical significance. The Jewish presence in Corfu dates back to the Middle Ages, while the community suffered near-total destruction during the German occupation. In June 1944, approximately 1,800 Corfu Jews were deported, mainly to Auschwitz, from where very few returned. The Synagogue remains an important monument to this centuries-old presence and to the town’s historical memory.
Pninat Yanai took up her post in Athens in August 2026, succeeding Noam Katz, and presented her credentials to the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, on 16 September.
Who is the new ambassador?
Yanai is a lawyer, strategic adviser and international relations analyst. She studied law at Bar-Ilan University and completed postgraduate studies in public and international law through Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with Northwestern University in the United States.
According to the official biography published by the Israeli Embassy, from 2012 to 2020 she represented Israeli companies operating in the defence, security, cybersecurity and energy sectors, working primarily in Africa. She subsequently founded a strategic consultancy firm.
She has also appeared in the Israeli media as a political and legal analyst.
