CORFU. Opening on Friday 11 October at 7:30pm.

The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipal Art Gallery presents the Takis Metallinos painting exhibition "Corfu, Then and Now." The exhibition will take place at the Peristyle Periodical Exhibition Section from October 11 to November 24, 2024. Through a visual narrative journey, the public will have the opportunity to explore the life of Corfu from the early 20th century to the present day.

The paintings depict familiar - for the most part - places in Corfu Town as well as the countryside, scenes from daily life, or professions that no longer exist. These creations stem from his constant need to express his love for the place where he was born, lives, and works.

The exhibition features 60 works in ink on paper, acrylic, watercolour and pastel, presented in a way that aligns with the chronological placement of their subjects. For example, we will see black-and-white ink on paper works that take us back to the early 20th century, while others, with vibrant colours and techniques, transport us to the 1960s and 1970s.

The curator of the exhibition, Art Historian Marina Papasotiriou, states:

(...) Metallinos' perspective, marked by romanticism and idealisation, moves from the past to the present, centered around the beauty of the place— a theme he has explored extensively from past to present. As he himself says, he depicts eras he did not live in but wishes he had, times characterised by simplicity, tranquility, and beauty. These are also the main qualities of the works on display: nostalgic, tender, authentic, from both the past and the present, and always beautiful (...)
