Discovery of rare indigenous grape variety and launch of new wine at Leivadiotis Winery
CORFU. Corfu’s winemaking tradition meets the future: The winery will open its doors to the public on Sunday 8 November, from 11:00 to 19:00, at its premises in Halikounas, Corfu.
Leivadiotis Winery: A new chapter in the history of Corfu wine
A remarkable discovery by Leivadiotis Winery has brought to light a previously unknown indigenous grape variety, opening up new horizons for winemaking in Corfu.
Corfu conceals an invaluable wealth of wine heritage, much of which remains unexplored. Leivadiotis Winery, owned by brothers Spyros and Adonis Leivadiotis, is not content simply to preserve tradition. Its aim is to discover, safeguard and showcase the island’s winemaking heritage.
As part of this effort, the winery has identified and brought to prominence a distinctive indigenous grape variety that does not appear as an identified variety in any of the records currently available. DNA testing has confirmed its unique identity, with no match found to any other known variety.
This is a particularly significant development, as the process of officially identifying the variety and registering it in the relevant grapevine variety catalogues is now under way. Brothers Spyros and Adonis Leivadiotis aim to make a meaningful contribution to the scientific study and promotion of Corfu’s wine heritage, raising awareness of this unique variety and creating the conditions for other winemakers to have the opportunity to cultivate it, make use of it and develop their own distinctive wines. This is an initiative that aspires to enrich Corfu’s vineyards as a whole and open up new possibilities for the future of local winemaking.
This discovery has already given rise to a new and distinctive white wine, offering the first taste of an entirely new chapter for Corfu’s vineyards.
At the same time, the winery is investing in new land, purchasing and leasing vineyards and planting indigenous grape varieties that are at risk of disappearing, in addition to the already familiar Skopelitiko and Kotriges varieties.
The vision goes beyond wine production: it is about securing for Corfu the place it deserves on the Greek and international wine map, with wines that authentically express their origins and can hold their own alongside prestigious international labels.
