CORFU. An encounter with Greek tradition through authentic costumes, jewellery and objects from a bygone era.

Corfu Lykeio Ellinidon is organising an event entitled “Authentic Traditions” offering a unique journey into the world of traditional Greek costume and objects that preserve traces of the people who wore and used them.

An old woman’s shirt bearing its owner’s embroidered initials, an underskirt, a segouni (traditional sleeveless outer garment), a buckle or a yatagan (curved sword) become starting points for a journey through time. Each object reveals details of everyday life, personal taste and the aesthetic sensibilities of a bygone era, while the marks left by time itself form part of its history and uniqueness.

The event will feature a selection of objects from the collections of Christina Tzamala, the Corfu Lykeio Ellinidon and Friends costume collection. Traditional costumes and jewellery, each with its own distinctive characteristics, come together to create a multifaceted narrative of Greek cultural heritage.

The evening will also feature traditional dances and songs, with the participation of the Corfu Lykeio Ellinidon Traditional Choir. The choir is will be directed by Apostolos Valsamas and Stefania Karydi, while the dance instruction is led by Chrysa Poul iasi and Liza Alexaki. The event will conclude with refreshments, in a spirit of hospitality and a shared appreciation of tradition.

Through “Authentic Traditions”, the Corfu Lykeio Ellinidon invites the public to discover objects that serve as valuable testimonies to our social and cultural history, and to uncover the human stories preserved within them.

The event will take place on Saturday 31 October, from 8 pm to 10 pm, at the Spiritual Centre of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, 2 Akadimias Street. Admission is free.

The event is being held with the financial support of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy and the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy.
