CORFU. The Corfiot maestro has conducted major concerts in Portugal and Spain.

With his work Cristo dell’Espirazione, the Corfiot conductor and composer Haralambos Makris won the Second Prize at the international composition competition in the Italian city of Taranto, Concorso Internazionale di Marce Inedite per la Settimana Santa “Città di Taranto.”

Twenty-three composers from Italy, Malta, and Greece participated in the competition with an equal number of works. The final concert took place on Saturday, March 7, at the Basilica Cattedrale di San Cataldo in Taranto. The five works that qualified for the final round of the competition were performed by the Grande Orchestra di Fiati S. Cecilia Città di Taranto, conducted by maestro and professor Giuseppe Grecucci.

The jury consisted of the internationally renowned Ermir Krantia, Dario Di Coste, Michele Pezzuto, and Donato Semeraro. The Brotherhood of Ss. Addolorata e San Domenico, which organised the competition, was represented on the jury by Don Giovanni Nigro. The aim of the competition is to renew composers’ interest in one of the most important genres of the international wind band repertoire, associated with the ceremonies of Holy Week.
