CORFU. Lazareto Islet is being permanently granted to the Municipality. The relocation of the swimming pool construction from NAOK to Agia Ekaterini is being considered. Meeting between the Mayor and the Board of Directors of the Public Property Company.

(Press Office) On Tuesday, November 12, the Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulimenos, met with the CEO of the Public Property Company (ETAD), Iro Hatzigiorgiou.

During the meeting, they discussed four significant pending issues concerning properties owned by ETAD:

  • The suspended restoration project for the Achilleion Palace,
  • The finalisation of the transfer of ownership of Lazareto Island to the Municipality,
  • The finalisation of the grant of a 7.2-stremma plot in Alykes for the construction of sports facilities,
  • The dilapidated five-story Asani building, located next to the historic Old Town Hall.

Regarding the Achilleion Palace, Ms. Hatzigiorgiou expressed her disappointment and concern over the project’s halted progress and assured the Mayor that ETAD is reviewing the problematic studies that caused the issues with the project. The project will be re-tendered to select a new contractor.

The final step for transferring ownership of Lazareto Island to the Municipality is scheduled for the upcoming ETAD Board meeting, where the issue is expected to be resolved definitively.

Regarding the 7.2-stremma plot in Alykes Potamou (Agia Ekaterini area), which was granted by KED in 2003 in exchange for a fee that was fully paid in 2013, the final transfer approval from the ETAD Board is expected soon. This plot is being considered as an alternative location for the construction of a swimming facility, funded by the “Antonis Tritsis” programme, in case the initial plan for its construction at the NAOK site does not materialise.

Finally, regarding the dilapidated and dangerous Asani building, which belongs to ETAD and for which the Municipality has stated it cannot proceed with restoration under the unfavourable conditions set, Ms. Hatzigiorgiou clarified that the building will be put up for sale or lease to eliminate its safety hazard in the heart of the old town.
