Warm reception for Corfu Prison School concert

Corfu Prison School put on a performance in front of a large audience last night. The concert took place in front of the Church of St. George at the Old Fortress - a pleasant last-minute change from the original choice of venue above mandraki.



The concert was performed by a combination of inmates and guards - something that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. It had previously been unheard of for inmates to rehearse together with guards and for permission to be granted for them to put on a concert together in front of an audience and not behind bars.

However, the creative cooperation of all those involved, the approval of the department of prosecution, the progressive attitude of the prison administration, the School Friends Association and, of course, the pupils and musical guards led to a cultural event unprecedented in Greece.



The event had a significant social effect on the local community as there exist many ideas and prejudices regarding the prison and its inmates.

One day after World Music Day and on the island of music, the event helped bridge the differences that had previously existed.
