Homeless man taken to hospital

CORFU. The matter of the Corfu homeless came to the forefront with the tragic case last Saturday of Giorgos Merianos who lived in his car in the Alykes car park.

Tony, a homeless man who lives at the entrance to the former Ioniki Bank in St. Spyridon Square (Plakada) was taken to hospital by ambulance, escorted by the police, on Friday afternoon.

The matter of the Corfu homeless came to the forefront with the tragic case last Saturday of Giorgos Merianos who lived in his car in the Alykes car park.

According to Municipality sources, repeated efforts were made to take care of Tony but a satisfactory solution was never found. Police sources say that locals had referred the matter to them and the Prosecutor ordered that he should be taken to the hospital.

The local authority has said that it is ready to support the creation of a facility to support all the homeless, something which has been in the air for years, and is hoping to make use of the funding programme.
