Corfu - world leader in beach accessibility for people with special needs
CORFU. The island now has 21 beaches which are accessible to people with mobility problems.
Deputy Mayor for Social Policies Andreas Skoupouras has issued the map with beaches where those with special needs can enjoy the sea.
The map has been shared on Greek and international travel websites as well as with embassies, special needs organizations and other related bodies. The beaches shown on the map have facilities such as ramps leading into the sea, amphibious wheelchairs or SEATRAC which have been acquired by Corfu Municipality, Corfu Special Needs Association and the Inian Islands Regional Administration.
Along with the locations the map also shows the type of facility at each beach as different people have different needs. The facilities are not only for those with special needs but also for senior citizens and those with mobility difficulties.
It should pointed out that over the last four years Corfu has led not only Greece, but the world in the provision of these facilities.
"Another 6 ramps are yet to come, which will replace those that are damaged, plus another 6 wheelchairs," said Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouras, who has made it a personal goal to make Corfu into a special needs-friendly town. "There has been international interest in the beaches with amphibious wheelchairs as it gives tourists with mobility problems from all over the world the opportunity to come here and enjoy their holidays."
In 2019 Corfu will take part in the ENAT (European Network for Accessible Tourism) annual international award, hoping to be declared the friendliest European region to those with special needs.
