More symbolic sit-ins at North Corfu schools in protest against Smile of the Child closure

CORFU. The pupils are calling on others to take part in the protest in Corfu Town at 11:00 on Thursday 22 December.

More and more school pupils in North Corfu are holding symbolic sit-ins in protest against the closure of the Smile of the Child residential home in Magoulades.

They began yesterday at the Agros Junior High and High Schools and continued today with sit-ins at Kassiopi Junior High and Amphipagiton Junior High with the children expressing support for their fellow pupils and friends and demanding that they not be moved to other residential homes elsewhere in Greece.

According to the Ionian Islands Regional Education Director Petros Aggelopoulos, of the 14 pupils that live at the Magoulades home, two attend primary schools and the other 12 are secondary pupils, most of whom attend the Agros schools.

Protest rally

The pupils shouted 'Don't take our Smile of the Child away!' again today and are calling on others to take part in the protest outside the former Prefecture (opposite the Municipal Theatre) in Corfu Town at 11:00 on Thursday 22 December. The protest is supported by the Parents' Association and the Secondary School Teachers Union (ELME).
