CORFU. The EKAB President assured that the supply of 18 ambulances will be put out to tender by the end of the year.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa signed on Wednesday 7 December the contract for the repair of Corfu EKAB's building.

This contract concerns the implementation of the project 'Repairs to the Corfu EKAB building' in order to proceed with the tender process for the repair of the existing building with a €43,000 funding from the Ionian Islands Region.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa signed the contract on behalf of the Ionian Islands Region, while EKAB's Vice President Panayiotis Koutsoubelis signed for EKAB. Present at the signing of the contract were both the EKAB President Nikos Papaefstathiou and the Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health, Social Welfare and Employment Melita Andrioti.

The purpose of this project is to address damage that has been noticed both outside and inside the two-storey building and to ensure the health and safety of employees.

Until it's relocated

The Regional Authority has expressed its willingness to EKAB's management to search for a financial tool to finance Corfu EKAB's relocation to another building, as soon as an area is found that will meet the necessary requirements.

However, the Ionian Islands Region decided to sign this contract with EKAB because it is considered an urgent need to repair the existing building until a building is found that will qualify as suitable for the permanent relocation of the Corfu EKAB. The Regional Governor even asked that the tender process be carried out quickly, if possible by the end of the year.

Ambulance base in North Corfu

At the Ionian Islands Regional Governor and Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health's meeting with EKAB's management, two important issues were discussed once again, concerning, on the one hand, EKAB's understaffing and, on the other hand, the lack of ambulances in the Ionian Islands.

As the EKAB President Nikos Papaefstathiou said, he has asked the Health Minister Thanos Plevris - and even received a positive response - the recruitment of 10 people for the Corfu EKAB, in order for an ambulance base to be created in North Corfu, something that the Regional Authority has highlighted many times as a top priority. He also informed that the Ionian Islands' request to create an ambulance base in North Corfu is included in EKAB's planning, which he has submitted to the Health Minister.

In addition to the recruitment of 10 people, the Ionian Islands Region will immediately proceed to the recruitment of 3 auxiliary staff to enhance the Corfu EKAB through the ESPA 2014-2020 programme.

The 18 ambulances

An important issue that Rodi Kratsa and Melita Andrioti discussed with EKAB's President and Vice President was the supply of 18 ambulances for the Ionian Islands Region through the ESPA 2014-2020 programme.

The Regional Governor also said that the Regional Authority had already amended the budget in October, which is now at €1,736,000, while EKAB is the one that must carry out the tender process.

EKAB's President assured the Regional Governor that by the end of the year the project for the supply of 18 ambulances will be put out to tender.
