CORFU. Strikers were demanding pay rises, collective labour agreements and proper work conditions.

A large number of workers from various sectors took part in protests in Corfu yesterday as part of the national 24-hour strike declared by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY). It was perhaps the largest such protest in recent years with workers and professionals protesting about the shrinking of real wages and income leading to people just barely surviving.

With the slogan "Cost increases are crushing us", unions, pensioners, farmers, and students gathered outside the Workers' Centre at 10:00. Representatives from the political parties PASOK-KINAL, SYRIZA, KKE,MeRA25, Laiki Sispirosi and Ekkinisi were also there.

The protestors then marched through the town demanding pay rises, collective labour agreements and proper work conditions.

Employees in the private and public sectors took part - local authorities, banks, hospital and psychiatric employees, primary and secondary school teachers, farmers, accountants, taxi drivers, lorry drivers and pensioners.

Journalists

There were no news reports yesterday either as local and Athens journalists, including all the mass media (print, television and radio, online) in the public and private sectors were also on strike. Enimerosi, both print and online, also took part.

Ferry services

The Seamen's Union also took part in the 24-hour strike and there were no ferry services yesterday.

Airports

The Federation of Civil Aviation Authority Employee Associations (OSYPA) also took part in the ADEDY strike.
