ATHENS. Minister for the Environment & Energy: "The tendering of the Corfu facility is one of the many ones for large infrastructure projects related to solid waste treatment in our country".

The Ministry for the Environment announced that the construction of the waste management facility will be put out to tender.

Yet another waste management facility has been put out to tender, this time in Corfu, which will serve the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, North Corfu, South Corfu and Paxos Municipalities.

According to the Ministry's announcement, the project with a €35.6 million budget has a capacity of 29,518 tons/year of mixed residual waste, 10,000 tons/year of separately collected recyclable materials and 14,197 tons/year of pre-sorted organic waste, while it will operate in accordance with the new European Union specifications.

It is a recovery and recycling facility that will accept all waste streams, such as recyclable materials, pre-sorted organic waste and residual waste. This new facility in Corfu will also be able to produce secondary fuel. Thus, the landfill rate for incoming waste is expected to be below 20.4%.

The Minister for the Environment & Energy Kostas Skrekas stated the following: "The tendering of the Corfu facility is one of the many ones for large infrastructure projects related to solid waste treatment in our country. In the near future, other facilities will also be put out to tender and the goal we have set is to put all the infrastructure necessary for the country in this sector out to tender by the beginning of 2023."

The General Secretary for the Coordination of Waste Management Manolis Grafakos said the following: "Our country is moving fast in the tendering of waste management facilities. The new tenders concern recovery and recycling facilities, circular economy facilities that meet the targets of our national plan, as well as the waste management targets set by European directives. Such is the case with the Corfu waste management facility that has been put out to tender. I would like to congratulate the Ionian Islands FODSA for quickly adapting this facility into a modern recovery and recycling facility, which will result in Corfu achieving the objectives of our national plan for waste management when it starts operating".
