CORFU. Pictures of the school following the first heavy rainfall of autumn.

The parents of the Corfu 6th Primary School pupils are obviously worried after seeing the condition of the school following the first heavy rainfall of autumn, with large amounts of water falling to the schoolyard and a torrent rushing down the road.

The schoolyard roof that was destroyed last year by a tree was never replaced, while there is another fallen tree that had never been removed.

Parents also said that the drain at the school entrance is blocked due to the road surfacing works, while rainwater runs freely from the prison's park to the schoolyard, which is located below the park.

Just 48 hours ago, they sent a document to the Municipal Social Protection, Education, Culture and Sports Department, the Educational Department, the Technical Works Department and DIADEYADK regarding the need for immediate interventions before the rainfall.

In particular, the parents are requesting that the following interventions be made:

a) Cleaning of the drain in front of the school entrance.

Last year, Kyprou St. was resurfaced and the school was renovated during the summer. These two actions resulted in the drain becoming clogged with asphalt and debris. With the first rainfalls, access to the school is expected to be almost impossible as now all the water will end up on that road and in front of the school.

b) Removal of the dangerous fallen tree.

The back side of the school is located below the park next to the prison. For quite some time now, there has been a fallen tree which, without any stabilisation or securing, is dangerous for the children, teachers and the building itself. If the tree falls into the yard following another heavy rainfall, it will be a miracle if there are no injuries or something worse.

c) Repair of the schoolyard roof destroyed following 'Ballos' storm last year.

During 'Balos' at the beginning of the last school year, a tree fell on the roof of the 6th Primary School yard and destroyed it.

Even though this roof was small, it kept rainwater out of the schoolyard and ensured that the latter would not be slippery. When it was destroyed, the ground became slippery, often causing accidents. There is also a need to clean the debris from the upper part of the wall so that rainwater does not run uncontrollably into the schoolyard.
