CORFU. All 27 passengers safely continued their journey to Athens on Arta KTEL coach.

Fire broke out on the intercity KTEL coach from Corfu to Athens with 27 passengers on board.

The incident happened at approximately 23:15 in Karteri, just 15 minutes after having left Igoumenitsa port. The fire, which broke out at the back of the bus, was immediately noticed by the driver, who stopped the bus and tried unsuccessfully to put it out with the fire extinguishers on board.

By the time firefighters arrived from Thesprotia Fire Department it was already too late and the bus was completely burnt out. Baggage and packages had been removed and escaped damage.

The head of Corfu Intercity KTEL Tasos Tsimpoulis told Enimerosi that all the passengers were taken to a safe spot and then safely continued their journey to Athens on Arta KTEL coach. The burnt out bus was moved to a safe spot nearby so that an inspection could be carried out and Thesprotia Fire Department is conducting an investigation.

MOT

According to Mr. Tsimpouli, the vehicle was 19-years-old and could be used for another eight years (27 years is the maximum length of operation) and had passed the annual MOT test. He said that the bus was insured both locally and nationally.

The incident comes almost a month after another similar incident with a Corfu KTEL Intercity coach, which burst into flames when it had been parked for a few minutes near to Menidi, Amphilohia.

That happened on 5 June and, a month later, the findings of the Amphilohia Fire Department regarding the cause of the fire have still not been published, Mr. Tsimpoulis told Enimerosi.
