CORFU. The Infrastructure Minister Kostas Karamanlis promised at his meeting with Mayor Meropi Ydraiou that the projects for the dams and the Othoni and Mathraki ports will proceed soon.

The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor met yesterday with the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis at the San Giacomo Old Town Hall.

Meropi Ydraiou raised a number of issues that need to be resolved – the dams project, the reconstruction of the town's water supply network, the construction of the Othoni and Mathraki ports, the need for funding to improve and maintain the road network and the promotion of the bypass project are some of these issues.

Desalination in Chrysida

Specifically on the desalination projects, the Minister told the Mayor that the Chrysida desalination project will be contracted within the next few weeks, while the Potamos desalination project will also proceed. He also made it clear that the large dam project will also be carried out.

Regarding the construction of the Othoni port, he said that there will be immediate promotion of the procedures so that it can be put out to tender, if possible within the summer. He also told the Mayor that he will take the necessary steps to create the town’s bypass.

The town’s water supply network

Regarding the Mayor's requests for funding for a project to replace the town's water supply network and to improve and maintain the road network, the Minister promised to examine the available options.

The Mayor said that the Minister is a friend of Corfu and expressed her great satisfaction for the promise and announcement he made regarding the dam project. As for the desalination projects, Mrs. Ydraiou pointed out that with the Chrysida desalination project will be able to provide drinking water to a large part of the town and this "small miracle", as she called it, will be completed with the construction of the Potamos desalination plant.

She also informed the Minister about the works carried out by the Municipality on the main road network and rural roads. She also expressed her hope that there will be available funding for works to be carried out in tourist areas leading to beaches, as well as in all the Municipality's communities on both the main and secondary roads.

The Minister said that he is standing by the Mayor's side in order to find solutions to all the issues that she brought to his attention and stressed that the cooperation and understanding between them will continue. Regarding the desalination projects in Chrysida and Potamos, as well as the large dam project, he said that the Government promises to carry them out.

Dams with public-private partnership

Among other things, Mr. Karamanlis said the following: “The dam project, which is a very large project, is becoming a reality because the Government, is doing it with determination and with public-private partnership, as it should be done. Thus, the project will not have to be paid by way of fees, which means that it also has a social dimension. The maintenance and operation will be carried out for 25 years by a private individual, but this does not mean that the citizens and the Corfu DEYAK will have to pay for it. It means that the State will bear these costs. Therefore, because there have been several fake news that this project will be very expensive, I would like to say that those who are saying this are the ones who said that this project is very large and those who are saying this are the ones who do not want the project to be carried out.”

It is worth noting that present at the Mayor's meeting with the Minister were also the Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas and the President of the local ND branch Spyros Pantelios.
