South Corfu Municipality also putting time limit on playing of music

South Corfu Municipality is attempting to control noise pollution from nighttime entertainment venues during the tourist season.

A discussion was held with residents at an open meeting two weeks ago, with businesspeople and residents making their views known. "The views of all parties were heard and the majority agreed that the times that music can be played need to be regulated," the President of the Quality of Life Committee Deputy Mayor Socrates Andriotis told Enimerosi.

At Monday's meeting of the South Corfu Council Mr. Andriotis put forward the decision of the Quality of Life Committee regarding regulation of times that music can be played and the granting of permission for live music to be voted on by the council.

He proposed that music be allowed until one o'clock in the morning in outdoor venues and until two o'clock in indoor venues with the maximum level allowed being 80 dB.

"This was followed by all the parties stating their views and they were in agreement," said Mr. Andriotis.

Different time limits for hotels

The regulations will only apply to cafe bars and entertainment venues as hotels come under the Ministry of Tourism regualtion which allows them to play music until three o'clock in the morning.

Incident at council meeting

The council was unable to vote on the matter as a local businesswoman interrupted to accuse a member of the local authority of lodging complaints against her in order to threaten her.

There was confusion and the council president was forced to adjourn the meeting until 19:00 the next day.
