The Commander of the 3rd Regional Administration of the Hellenic Coast Guard visited the Diaponitia Islands on Wednesday 8 June. The visit took place following the completion of the first phase of works at the Othoni Port.

Present at the visit were also the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, the Othoni Deputy Mayor Dimitris Katehis and the Corfu Port Authority managing director Spyros Zervopoulos.

The Othoni Port has two floors. On the ground floor there are the Port Authority offices, while members of the Hellenic Coast Guard who are working in this Port Authority are living for free on the first floor.

The 3rd Regional Administration of the Hellenic Coast Guard, understanding that the difficult living conditions and the problems in the staff's accommodation are making the difficulties that already exist in a small and remote island worse, planned and scheduled works for the Othoni Port that will be implemented in two phases.

The following works have been carried out in the first phase, which has already been completed:

a) Replacement of the building's plaster and painting by the Corfu Port Authority
b) Supply, transport and installation of electrical appliances donated by the Greek-German Friendship Association ‘Filia Velbert’ to serve the needs of the staff
c) Furniture in the Othoni Port building to improve the living conditions of the staff living there

For the second phase, a €150,000 funding was secured in cooperation with the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality and with the support of the General Secretariat of Ports, Port Policy and Maritime Investments, for the repair of the Othoni Port building. This project will be carried out by the Central Corfu Municipality, which owns the building. Once the work has been completed, on the one hand the number of officers who will live in the building will increase and on the other hand the working and living conditions will be further improved. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2023.

The 3rd Regional Administration of the Hellenic Coast Guard would like to thank the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality for the valuable cooperation and support it has offered to the Coast Guard and especially to the Othoni Port, the Corfu Port Authority for always helping and showing its support, as well as the Greek-German Friendship Association ‘Filia Velbert’ which supported the Coast Guard with its kind donation and assistance.
