Corfu Environmental Protection Association is demanding answers from the Municipality regarding the state of neglect on Vidos Island over the last three years. In its statement it claims that the island is only safe and clean around the restaurant belonging to the hotel unit, whereas there are scenes of neglect elsewhere.

Environmental Protection Association statement:

We hear that the Municipality has recently been cleaning up Vidos and carrying out maintenance and replacement work so that the small island can be ready to receive local and foreign visitors.

On SUnday 22 May we went to Vidos on a private boat to see what condition the island is in - we couldn't use the shuttle boat as there isn't a municipal boat available for the public yet. There is a boat that transfers supplies for IKOS but the only services are at 14:30 and 23:30.

The scene on the island was worse than disappointing! We discovered that the island is only safe and clean around the restaurant serving IKOS customers.

Beyond that there exists a state of neglect with rubbish, taps with no water, an open dry well, dead branches and tree trunks from last year, exposed cables and even a WW2 shell lying there!

There is only one drinking trough for all the animals on the island and consequently they remain thirsty and are forced to drink seawater. This is also the breeding season and there are a lot of chicks - the correct procedure is for maintenance to be carried out two months before and two months after.

Where is the island that used to be full of life with summer camps and bathers being shuttled back and forth on the municipal boat all day? Over the last three years we have been losing Vidos and members of the public are reporting that the hotel company is advertising it as a private island.

We await answers from the responsible municipal services.

We have informed the coastguard of the shell we found on the shore and they told us that they will bring a special disposal unit to remove it.
