CORFU. Businesspeople obstruct the clean-up work that the North Corfu Municipality is carrying out on the Agios Georgios Pagon beach.

Statement from the North Corfu Municipality on the obstruction of the clean-up work on the Agios Georgios Pagon beach by businesspeople:

“Once again, we denounce the ongoing and dangerous obstruction of the Municipal Authority's work by the citizens and businesspeople of Agios Georgios Pagon.

1. Two years ago, there had been serious sabotage of a North Corfu Municipality grader, as well as insults to the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor.

2. Apart from the damage caused to the vehicle, which is Municipal property, and the delay to the work, this put workers in physical danger.

3. In the space of a few days, there had been another act of sabotage on a municipal vehicle that was cleaning up the Agios Georgios Pagon beach.

4. Last year, they would even put bollards in the ditches to prevent the Municipality's effort to improve and widen the the Agios Georgios Pagon - Aspiotades road.

This year, we are facing the reaction of businesspeople and a dangerous sabotage to the municipal vehicle, which caused the clean-up work on the Agios Georgios Pagon beach to stop.

We honestly do not understand why people are acting this way, especially businesspeople who make their living from the tourism sector. By cancelling the works for the development of our area, those who will eventually face the negative consequences are our fellow citizens, the businesspeople, their families, our area, as well as those who are responsible for this. At the same time, it is obvious that they have no respect for their colleagues or the workers.

The North Corfu Municipality is stating that it will take any action under the law to, first of all, ensure the safety of municipal personnel, our fellow citizens, the municipal vehicles and the course of the North Corfu Municipality's works.

As for the guilty parties - they should bear in mind that the cancellation of the Municipality's efforts for a smooth and high-quality tourist season affects every resident. Both the mind behind the act and those that carried it out are undermining the development of their own area and the lives of the residents and businesspeople.

The North Corfu Municipality will continue its efforts to upgrade the Agios Georgios Pagon beach and resolve the long-standing problems.
