CORFU. Pupils in 2nd Year Class 3 will be responsible for selecting and writing the topics.

Pupils at Corfu 3rd Junior High School have started a new creative project with the assistance of their teachers. Inspired by the 'Cultural Topics' school activity programme, they decided to start their own online school newspaper 'Mathitiki Penna' (Pupils' 'Pen').

The school e-paper has been online for a few days now and the 20 pupils in 2nd Year Class 3 have every reason to feel proud of their work. They are exclusively responsible for selecting and writing the topics and the Literature teacher Iphigenia Letsiou supervises and coordinates their efforts. The teachers Maria Karydi and Entelo Zoto also provide assistance and technical supervision is provided by the school deputy principal Athanasia Kavada.

"The creation of a school newspaper is an enjoyable and creative activity which encourages pupils' free expression and communication," Ms. Letsiou told Enimerosi. "It also encourages the children to take initiatives and work in teams, learning how to support one another and develop self-confidence."

Topics

The school newspaper (you can see it here) covers a wide range of topics, such as sport, culture, gastronomy, travel, entertainment and school activities and also includes articles by pupils on gender discrimination, violence, the benefits of pets etc.

"The children were very keen on the idea, although it is a difficult project, as they have find topics, select and write them. Nevertheless, it is something that they love to do," said Ms. Letsiou, adding that the school newspaper is a constructive way for the pupils to express themselves freely, take action and take on responsibility.

She says that the team meets every week and each person takes on the responsibility to produce one topic that they like, either by themselves or together with others, and in this way encouraging cooperation.
