Repair of damage to infrastructure in South Corfu progressing slowly

compensation

CORFU. Flood victims still have not received compensation for household goods and simple repair work.

The repair of damage to infrastructure in South Corfu, following the ‘Ballos’ storm last October, is progressing at snail’s pace and sloppily, due to lack of funds. In fact, although three months have passed since the storm, the Municipality has only received €600,000 of the total €4-million funding it had requested from the Ministry of Interior, in order to carry out the necessary work.

But even the €600,000 that have been given, were sent in installments. Τhe first one – €300,000 – had been paid at the end of December, in order to do the clean-up work and remove the debris, as well as to carry out work for rainwater management.

The rest of the funding arrived just a few days ago and South Corfu Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kourtesis told Enimerosi that this money will be used to repair walls and pavements, clean-up drains and carry out road surfacing – initially in Messonghi and Moraitika and then in Pavliana, Stroggili, Chlomos and Agios Mathaios.

Soon

According to Mr. Kourtesis, the work will begin within the next two weeks, while the repair work on the road by the Messonghi river, which had collapsed during the ‘Ballos’ storm, has already begun. However, as the new tourist season approaches and given the slow pace of payments, the aim is to completely repair all infrastructure before the new season begins.

Still waiting for compensation

Meanwhile, problems with the constitution of the three-member committees to examine the applications, due to lack of staff, have delayed the payment of compensation to the Municipality’s flood victims. However, as Mayor Kostas Lessis told Enimerosi, most of the applications have been examined and compensation will be paid immediately to those eligible.

According to the responsible authority, out of the 75 applications, 55 have been examined. On the contrary, in the Central Corfu Municipality, compensation had been paid to 163 eligible people a week ago.
