CORFU. Platform with map of accessible facilities for those with special needs.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality plans to end illegal parking in disabled spaces and ramps with a new smart app.

Special sensors will be used to prevent these spaces from being taken by other drivers, which will immediately inform the Municipality and Traffic Police, who can then take action.

The smart system for disable parking spaces will allow these spaces to be monitored and will also collect data online. Users will be able, via mobile or tablet, to learn in real time where spaces are available - how many are occupied, how many are free and how many are unavailable due to sensors being out of order.

The app will be available in two languages - Greek and English. Those entitled willl receive a chip from the Municipality by which their vehicle will be recognised by the special sensor placed in the parking space. This means that if someone else uses the space, the sensor won't recognise them and the Municipality and Traffic Police will immediately be informed.

Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras told Enimerosi that there are 29 disabled parking spaces in Corfu Town at the moment (14 in the Lower Square car park and 15 in various other locations) and it is planned for all of these to be covered by the smart app. He said that none of them are permanently occupied by other cars, but a lot of drivers park there illegally for a short time, creating problems for those that are entitled to them.

Available facilities

According to Mr. Skoupouras, a second app is also being planned, showing available facilities for those with reduced mobility and others. This app will also prevent drivers from blocking ramps through the use of sensors on a 24-hour basis.

"Our aim is to create a platform with a map of accessible facilities and interactive navigation via safe routes for those with spevial needs," said Mr. Skoupouras. "The local authority is aiming to complete these two projects in 2022."

These two innovative apps will significantly improve the everyday lives of those with special needs who constantly come up against the arbitrary conduct of dozens of other drivers.
