Price of souvlaki increases

CORFU. The price of souvlaki in rolled pita in Corfu΄s fast food outlets has reached €2.80.
Even the price of souvlaki, the national fast food of the Greeks, which until recently was a cheap and quick food choice, has increased. Vassilis Vassilakis, member of the Panhellenic Federation of Restaurant & Related Professions Board and Τreasurer of the Corfu Federation of Professionals, Craftsmen & Merchants Board, told Enimerosi that prices in Corfu’s fast food outlets have already increased by €0.20 - €0.30.
“There have already been increases in several shops in Corfu, due to the general price increase in other products, such as energy, natural gas, meat, oil, fruit and vegetables. As a result, the prices in the catering sector have increased,” said Mr. Vassilakis.
The prices
The price for the favorite food of both Greeks and tourists – souvlaki – has increased from €1.50 - €1.80 to €1.70 - €2, with the price of souvlaki in rolled pita now reaching €2.80, when it used to be €2.50. The sector’s professionals told Enimerosi that, despite the effort to keep prices low – something they have been previously doing – conditions now make it impossible to not increase the prices.
Price increases
It is worth noting that while, during the lockdown period, many products were bought at affordable prices, when quarantine ended, their price shot up. The seed oil, for example, used to be sold for €12 + VAT, but now its price has reached €19 + VAT.
Pork and chicken cost €1 more than last year, while the price of a propane tank reached €44 at the end of the season, when it used to be €35.
Considering that meat restaurants need at least two propane tanks per day, the difference is as much as €14 compared to the previous lower price. “We used to keep prices low, but now it is difficult to continue to do so,” said Pericles Mitsialis, a fast food outlet owner.
