CORFU. Images reminiscent of the not-so-distant past on South Corfu roads.

For the last week or so, the rubbish bins in South Corfu have been overflowing onto the roads.

"Large piles have built up in Kavos, with nearly 20 tons, and Moraitika, with 10 tons, but there are large piles of rubbish in several locations in South Corfu," the South Corfu Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Antonis Vlassis told Enimerosi.

"Even before the dispute created when Nikos Gousis brought an action to the Committee, citing Article 152, the bins hadn't been emptied due to a financial dispute with the contractor," Mr. Vlassis added. "Today, we were able to empty only the blue recycling bins with a municipal refuse truck."

Nikos Gousis' response

Nikos Gousis has responded with a statement regarding the action he has brought: "Mayor Kostas Lessis' argument regarding the emergency that he created in the municipality seems like a child's joke - that the action demanding a check on the legality is to blame. The refuse isn't being transferred because the transfer contract has ended - nothing more and nothing less. This is the truth! Consequently, Mr. Lessis' irrelevant argument putting the blame on the action that has been brought is just an attempt to abdicate responsibility.

If this were the case, then, as can be easily understood, the waste transfer would have stopped a long time ago! But it didn't stop. Quite simply, the contract was completed once the designated amount of waste - approximately 2,700 tons - had been transferred."

Contract renewal

Nevertheless, Mayor Kostas Lessis said at a recent press conference that the local authority will make every effort to ensure that rubbish is not left on the roads.

The Municipal Finance Committee is meeting today in order to approve the renewal of the contract and complete all the necessary procedures for the refuse trucks to start collecting again.

"I consider that it is just a matter of days before this happens," said the Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services.
