Negligence found in Temploni landfill fire safety system, just one year after fires!

CORFU. The Fire Department inspection found inadequate fire safety measures and SYDISA has been fined.
Corfu SYDISA (Solid Waste Management Association) ends its tenure with yet another fine before it “hands over the keys” to the new Regional FODSA (Solid Waste Management Organisation).
Following on from a series of European and Greek fines for violation of environmental legislation, another one has been imposed, this time for inadequate fire safety measures.
The Fire Department conducted an inspection at the Temploni Cultural Society’s request, due to the fact that there had been two fires in the area last summer. It seems, however, that Temploni landfill hasn't learnt its lesson as, exactly one year later, the Fire Department found negligence that could potentially fill the air and soil with dioxins yet again. And in the case of the area outside the fence, where thousands of tons of waste bales are deposited, there are absolutely no fire safety measures.
A summary of the inspection’s conclusions:
- The permanent fire-fighting water supply system in the facility was not functioning properly during the test (no adequate water pressure in two fire hose cabinets).
- The inspection and maintenance fire safety book was not sealed - signed for
the current year.
- Opposite the landfill facility (outside the fence) there is a place for temporary placement of flammable materials (bales), near vegetation and without fire safety measures and equipment.
A fine was confirmed and the demand was delivered to the Director of Corfu SYDISA Spyros Koronakis.
- The issuance of a Certificate of Active Fire Safety is also required for the facility.
The Fire Department document states that “The emergency inspections conducted by the Fire Department are solely related to the fire safety measures and equipment required by law.
The legality of the buildings, their use, the land use, the authorised activity and the granting of operating license falls under the exclusive competence of the authorities responsible in law.
The responsibility for the adoption, maintenance and proper functioning of fire safety measures and equipment, in accordance with existing legislation, lies with the owners of the premises who are primarily responsible for fire safety.”
