CORFU. Access for those with special needs in selected parts of Corfu Old Fortress and Old Town.

Corfu Old Fortress will be more accessible to those with special needs, as part of the programme to improve accessibility at the country’s museums, archaeological sites and cultural infrastructure.

The project “Access for those with special needs in selected parts of Corfu Old Fortress and Old Town” with a budget of €232,000 includes works to improve accessibility such as floor coverings, paving and ramp construction in exhibition areas, as well as the removal of the reinforced concrete surface in two parts of the Old Fortress.

Special needs signs are being placed at selected places and the project is complemented by the production of information material and digital applications for those with special needs in Corfu Old Town museums.

A study will also be completed for special needs access in four selected places in Corfu Old Town. These are the entrance to the Old Fortress, Panagia Kremasti Square (Venetian well), Agia Eleni Square and the area around the Corfu Metropolitan Church.

The project is part of the Interreg Greece - Albania Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Programme 2014-2020, the project “Targeted ActIons for the preservation, rehabilitation and promotion of historical, cultural and natural assets encouraging TOURISM, in the entire GR-AL - Tactical Tourism”. Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities is responsible for its implementation.

According to the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, “The Ministry of Culture and Sports has as a top priority the improving of accessibility to the country's monuments, archaeological sites and museums, as provided for by the National Action Plan for the Rights of People with Disabilities. Throughout Greece, from accessibility improvements to the Acropolis or smaller archaeological sites and museums, a programme of actions and projects is being developed so that the cultural monuments can become friendly and accessible to all citizens and visitors to the country. We have set a goal to have all the necessary work completed by 2025.”
