CORFU. The conference will be held in June 2022, bringing together more than 700 participants from 100 countries around the world.
Just 3 years after the waste management crisis and the corresponding defamation that the island of Corfu received globally, Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is pleased to announce that it will be organising the 9th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management “CORFU 2022 - 9th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management” in collaboraration with the National Technical University of Athens, headed by Professor Maria Loizidou.
The conference will be held in June 2022 on the island of Corfu, bringing together more than 700 participants from 100 countries around the world. A two-day school focusing on sustainable solid waste management and circular economy will precede the conference.
This conference is a continuation of the previous eight successful conferences - ATHENS 2012, ATHENS 2014, TINOS 2015, CYPRUS 2016, ATHENS 2017, NAXOS 2018, HERAKLION 2019 and THESSALONIKI 2021 - and is one of the
largest and best-recognized conferences worldwide focusing on waste management.
The aim of the conference is to present and address issues related to sustainable solid waste management, with particular emphasis on the development of relevant modern technologies and the implementation of corresponding effective practices.
In addition, the conference will provide an opportunity for representatives of local authorities, public and private bodies, members of the academic and research community involved in this scientific field at European and international level to meet with the ultimate aim of proposing and highlighting the relevant possibilities and opportunities for strengthening the circular economy and saving resources.
The conference will include the organisation of specific topics that will focus, at a municipal level, on addressing the challenges of proper management of generated municipal solid waste.
Conference topics will also include: a) circular economy, b) recycling, c) marine pollution and plastics, d) biological waste treatment methods (composting, anaerobic digestion), e) energy recovery from waste, f) bio-refineries, g) management of specific waste streams, etc.
The conference is part of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality’s participation in the European Commission's “100 Intelligent Cities Challenge”
programme, in which the Municipality is participating with the main theme of “Waste Management and Circular Economy”.
