Large-scale project at Antinioti Lagoon in Natura 2000 area

CORFU. Antinioti Lagoon has been designated a protected Natura 2000 area for its biodiversity and wetlands and building is not allowed within a distance of 500m.
Only agricultural work using organic cultivation methods is allowed in the area around the lagoon, which is rich in natural flora.
The Association for the Protection of the Corfu Environment has issued the following statement:
The Agia Ekaterina area is included in the protected zones and we have been informed that the construction of a tourist complex is being planned there, covering and area of 237.3 stremma, which will include a hotel, 45 villas and a conference centre as well as a spa and health centre. A fast-track investment is being planned which will bypass environmental legislation as it is considered a "strategic investment".
The law regarding tourist complexes provides for a public access road and consumption of up to 450 litres of water per bed - in other words, over 300 tons of water per day for the whole complex. We cannot understand how this is possible given that there is already a serious problem with water supply in the surrounding area!
Has the necessary certification been issued by the municipality? If yes, by which local authority and following which procedures?
We declare our complete opposition to yet another environmental crime in the name of 'development', especially at a time when we are paying a huge cost for the destruction of nature and the continued intervention in the animal kingdom with the transformation of what had been limited to animals into a human virus. This is how new pandemics are created which not only have a negative impact on our health, but have also hit tourist enterprises and it goes without saying we don't need more tourist accommodation at a time when facilities that already exist are either closed or operating below normal levels.
What is needed is support for the primary sector, securing of employment for the island's residents and as much self-sufficient produce as possible. The basic pre-condition for this is the use of land for agricultural cultivation and not its destruction.
