CORFU. A caterpillar track vehicle was sabotaged - the second such act in the space of a few months.

The vehicle was cleaning up the road at Agios Georgios Pagon beach.

North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris said that the discovery was made by a municipal worker who had gone to work there. The electricity had been cut off at a nearby pole so that there could be darkness. The damage to the vehicle was judged to be dangerous and the police were called immediately.

There was another act of sabotage a few months ago on a North Corfu municipal grader which was doing repair and improvement work on the Agios Georgios Pagon - Aspiotades road, putting workers' lives at danger. There had also been insults to the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for Works, Development, Investment and Utilisation of municipal property.

Local authority statement:

"We condemn - yet again - this incident, which, along with causing sadness, shame and frustration, leads to think about what is behind it.

The goal seems to be the sabotage of work and progress towards the development of the North Corfu Municipality and Agios Georgios beach.

The local authority does everything that is necessary to physically protect its workers, municipal property and equipment and the progress of works in North Corfu.

Acts of sabotage are a matter of distress for all North Corfu residents and undermines development and the lives of residents."
