34 Corfu beaches now accessible for those with mobility problems

CORFU. Network of beaches in the Ionian Islands accessible for those with mobility problems.
Ionian Islands Regional Administration is setting up a network of beaches accessible for those with mobility problems. The proposal from Deputy Regional Governor for Finance & Culture Katerina Mothonaiou was given the go-ahead following a unanimous decision from the Regional Council to set up Seatrack systems in the following Municipalities: Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Sami, Argostoli, Lixouri, Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands, North Corfu and South Corfu.
The project was successfully initiated in 2015 during the previous Regional Administration under Theodoros Galiatsatos and is being continued by the present administration.
A total of 10 Seatrack systems will be set up to facilitate both residents and visitors with special needs on Ionian Island beaches.
"We are supporting those with special needs so that they don't feel different," said Ms. Mothonaiou.
Two Seatracks will be set up in Zakynthos and one each in Lefkada, Ithaca, Sami, Argostoli, Lixouri, Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands, North Corfu and South Corfu. Each Seatrack costs €8,680.
Innovative system
The innovative system consists of a fixed track mechanism in which a wheel chair can be moved in and out of the water allowing those with mobility problems to go into the sea without assistance. The user has a remote control and the system is powered by solar energy.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras said that Corfu will have an unrivalled network of accessible beaches making the island not only a popular tourist destination, but also one that is friendly to visitors with special needs.
A total of 34 beaches throughout the island will now be accessible for those with mobility problems - in addition to the 3 to be provided by the Regional Authority there will be another 6 plus another 24 wheelchairs provided by the municipality in collaboration with the Special Needs Association.
There is already a Seatrack system in Benitses, set up by the previous Regional Authority and the then Deputy Governor for Social Welfare Alekos Michalas. Andreas Skoupouras said that the new Seatrack systems will be in place by July.
According to Mr. Skoupouras, the Seatrack systems will be set up in Benitses, Ipsos, Dassia, Paleokastritsa, Alykes, the Sailing Club, Moraitika, Acharavi and NAOK.
