CORFU. If the Centre doesn΄t get extra medical personnel, it΄s not out of the question that it may have to close for 12 days.

Lefkimmi Health Centre is calling for help and warns that it is in danger of closure due to the serious lack of personnel. This will be especially problematic in the month of June, when it won't be able to cover all of the necessary shifts and the vaccination shifts will have to be cut from 48 morning and evening to 8 - with assistance from private doctors.

Just four doctors will have to cover 60 24-hour shifts at the Health Centre in June.

South Corfu Deputy Mayor for Education and Social Policy Dr. Giorgos Sayias told Enimerosi that they will be only be able to cover 35 of these due to lack of personnel as two doctors will be on leave.

It is not known how the Centre will operate next month without extra medical personnel being brought in immediately and it is not out of the question that it will have to close for 12 days - with the local community suffering the consequences.

A solution will need to be found by the 6th Health Region and Lefkimmi Health Centre Director Yianna Karvelis has written to them asking for something to be done immediately.

Vaccinations continuing

Superhuman efforts are being made to ensure that the vaccination programme at the Health Centre continues to operate fully.

Since 1 April, when the programme began, there have of neccesity been extra shifts to ensure that it is fully operational. The vaccination centre operates from 8a.m. to 8p.m. with one doctor, two nurses recruited by South Corfu Municipality and three administrative staff.

"There has been a great response from the public and vaccinations are being administered continuously," said Dr. Sayias.
