School Recycling Marathon begins

CORFU. Nursery school pupils also taking part.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality began the Recycling Marathon today with the primary school pupils now back at school. This is the second year of the Marathon in collaboration with the Followgreen recycling reward platform and the Mayor visited Afra Primary School accompanied by Deputy Mayors Yiannis Seremetis and Panayiota Tzane.
The school recycling marathon is organised in collaboration with the Ionian Islands Regional Primary & Secondary Education Department and is supported by Maria Zervou, responsible for education in the Municipality, the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation, AFIS and the aluminium recycling programme 'Every Can Counts'.
This year nursery schools will also be taking part in the marathon in order to raise environmental awareness in as many pupils as possible.
Nursery and primary pupils are being asked to recycle by sorting 4 types of material at source - paper, aluminium (just primary pupils), plastic and batteries - in special cardboard bins that have been placed at all the schools taking part.
Pupils, parents and teachers come together as a team in an effort to show that recycling is continuing in order to protect the environment.
For the start of the project the Central Corfu Mayor paid a visit to Afra Primary School whose pupils collected the largest amount of recyclable waste last year.
She said that the aim this year is, despite the difficulties due to the pandemic, not to forget our good habits. She invited all members of the public to become members of followgreen.gr so that we can all aid the efforts of the pupils via the platform by giving points to the school of their choice. The Mayor also thanked the Cleansing Department for its tremendous work as well as all those who support the work of the municipality in practice "so that we can achieve the important goal of reducing the waste that we produce and increase recycling," as she said.
Also present today on behalf of the municipality were the Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Yiannis Seremetis and Deputy Mayor for European Programmes, Development & Digital Governance Panayiota Tzanne.
How the project works
When the bins are full the materials are weighed by the Cleansing Department and the school receives reward points per kilo and per material. The performance of each school is recorded on the Schools page (followgreen.gr/centralkerkira/contest) which is available for all to see. Those who are members of the platform can also give points to schools taking part in support of the pupils' efforts.
At the end of the school year, if the health situation allows, there will be a special event to present awards to the participating schools.
In last year's School Marathon the results were very encouraging as over 7,500kg of recyclable materials were collected by primary school pupils. It is hoped that pupils will be just as enthusiastic this year.
