CORFU. By Kyriakos Kolesis, Corfu Prison School Director.

The Corfu community remains an open community with deep-rooted experiences and acquaintance with foreigners, diversity and those who are rejected by society.

This has been demonstrated by the psychiatric and penitentiary facilities that have been on the island for years. It was once again demonstrated this year by the efforts of Friends of Corfu Prison School to collect OTE phonecards for the festive season (for inmates to communicate with family and friends), Christmas cards with warm wishes (for this period of double isolation for them) and sweets in individual packages.

In total, 68 €4 and 15 €10 phonecards were given along with lots of Christmas cards and a variety of sweets. These were handed over to Prison Supervisor Efthimia-Lambrini and Prison Chief Dalianis Elisaios, who gave warm thanks to the School and Friends Association, especially as they didn't have support from anyone else this year.

As can be seen from the photos, even the way the gifts have been prepared shows the love and care of the Friends of the School for the inmates, which gives encouragement to both teachers and inmate pupils.

We would like to give special thanks to cafe-roastery Cafetierra (Alexandros, Aggelos and Spyros) for holding the event, Βoulanger  Κoulouris in Solari (Roula and Stamatis) for their warm contribution and Spyridoula for coordinating.

The Friends' Association showed that the social distancing our society is necessarily experiencing can be balanced by love for others - especially strangers. In this way we can continue the historic tradition of the island and our identity.
