CORFU. "Public recognition of their contribution at this difficult time is the very least we can show in gratitude to these unseen heroes who work voluntarily and without reward," said the North Corfu Deputy Mayor.

On the occasion of International Volunteer Day on 5 December the North Corfu Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy & Environment Spyridoula Kokkali issued the following statement:

"North Corfu Municipality has the good fortune to have citizens who make an important contribution to the community through their voluntary activities - recycling, civil protection, community solidarity, stray animals etc. - which are motivated by their love for their fellow humans in all aspects of their life, for the natural environment and the development of the area. Especially with regard to the recycling centres in North Corfu. These centres were 'born' because of volunteers and were lovingly adopted and supported - taking the number up to 29 in the municipality.

The importance and effectiveness of the recycling centres in Corfu and the North Corfu Municipality clearly attest to the importance of the Antonis Tritsis Local Authority Development & Solidarity funding programme for the creation of Recycling Centres and Waste Transfer Stations throughout Greece.

Volunteerism is the oxygen of our society and the vital element for social cohesion. It promotes priciples and values such as altruism, selfless contribution, solidarity, collectivism, dignity and creative action. It is the duty of the local authority to make use of and recognise voluntary contributions and to help direct them to where they are needed.

Thanks to our volunteers we can respond more effectively with acts of solidarity and for this reason I, as Deputy Mayor and on behalf of the local authority, would like the express the gratitude of all of us to the volunteers.

Public recognition of their contribution at this difficult time is the very least we can show in gratitude to these unseen heroes who work voluntarily and without reward - whether it be organisations, groups or individuals with a social conscience."
