CORFU. Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou issued a statement following the tragic accident costing the life of a 14-year-old boy.

"The tragic accident on Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd. cost the life of a young boy.

We are all shocked and for me, personally, it is extremely painful as I am friendly with the boy's family and there are no words that can comfort his parents.

Even though the road safety and lighting on the road is not the responsibility of the Municipality, I cannot just stand by and the same applies to all of us.

On my own initiative I am calling a meeting on Tuesday with the Regional Administration, which is responsible for the main roads, the Municipality, Traffic Police and the Primary and Secondary Education Departments.

I would like to remind you that the Municipality has already started work on road markings and signage outside schools for the safety of pupils.

This meeting is not just going to be a formality - on the contrary, decisions have to be taken with regard to road safety.

The Municipality has a specific proposal, which includes the following:

- Improvement of street lighting at specific points on the main roads. If necessary, the Municipality will assist the Regional Administration.
- Joint 5-year programme with the Municipality and Regional Administration for roadworks on the main roads to improve safety.
- Road safety educational programme for the schools in our Municipality. This will be coordinated by the Municipality in collaboration with the Educational Departments and the Ionian University.
- Following a comprehensive study, signage placement on the roads and streets of the Municipality - especially at the danger spots in each district."
