CORFU. 40 confirmed cases amongst Corfu permanent residents and 52 cases amongst visitors.

The Central Corfu Municipal Covid Watch Committee has begun monitoring the pandemic on a local level in real time. It has recorded the basic epidemiological data since the first appearance of COVID-19 cases in order to have a clear picture of how the pandemic has developed in Corfu up to now.

Based on the data it has collected the committee has recorded 40 confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst Corfu permanent residents and 52 amongst visitors from the beginning of the pandemic until 14 September.

The figures show that there has been a relatively limited spread of the SARS-COV-2 virus in Corfu. The ratio of confirmed cases is 0.4 per 1,000 population compared to approximately 1.3 / 1,000 nationwide. The real number of cases is much greater than that but can be estimated with relative certainty as being less than 1% of the population in Corfu.

As regards the geographical spread of the cases amongst residents, the greatest concentration is in Central Corfu and in Corfu Town in particular. The number in other districts and in North and South Corfu remains low.

The epidemiological curve can be seen with the reappearance of cases amongst Corfu residents in mid-July following a period of around 2 months without any confirmed cases. From mid-July until 24 August new cases were recorded with regular frequency but after that there was a relative decrease in frequency.

Nevertheless, the data shows that the virus has spread through the population in Corfu and there may be a spike at any time. It is difficult to predict when there could be a spike and for how long and is important to strictly adhere to the measures and continuously monitor the pandemic on a local level in order to identify possible clusters immediately and control them.

From now on the Covid Watch Committee will be in a position to monitor the pandemic on a local level in real time so that infections can be identified immediately and local authorities can take action to control them. It will also continue developing as clear a picture as possible of the spread of the virus amongst the Corfu population.

The committee has produced a detailed presentation of the COVID-19 data in Corfu and published it on the official Municipal website.

The presentation, which will be regularly updated can be seen here (in Greek).
