΄Kerkyraiki Anagenisi΄: "Implement the Municipal Council΄s decisions on the pandemic now"

CORFU. "We must plan and take action to safeguard public health and the economy. Especially now that time has become limited.." says Chrysanthos Sarlis΄ party in a letter to Meropi Ydraiou.
The 'Kerkyraiki Anagenisi' local party, led by Chrysanthos Sarlis, sent a letter to the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou requesting the implementation of the proposal which was approved by the Municipal Council regarding measures to support professionals and businesses that have been hit by the coronavirus pandemic along with measures to protect public health.
"Madame Mayor,
During the discussion on COVID-19, the 'Kerkyraiki Anagenisi' party put forward a proposal regarding the measures that the local authority should take in collaboration with the other Municipalities and the Ionian Islands Regional Administration. The Council voted in favour of this proposal.
Unfortunately, to date, neither have plans been made not has it been implemented.
We must not forget the following:
- As long as there is no vaccine, the threat of a new coronavirus outbreak will remain with us.
- We are a tourist destination with two major points of entry (port and international airport).
- Tourist professionals, large, medium-sized and small businesses are making every effort possible to save what they can of this year's season.
- Economically, the coming winter is expected to be extremely difficult for workers and businesses in all sectors.
- Without wishing to spread panic, we must point out the reality - if we don't take steps now to supervise and control the situation, there is a big risk of our region very quickly becoming a 'red' zone.
- If we don't help ourselves, we can't expect someone else to save us.
The Municipality, with the Mayor at its head, is obliged to execute the decisions of the Municipal Council. We have stated this several times and asked the Mayor about specific steps that should already have been taken.
Apart from some vague generalisations, we are unaware of a specific plan to protect public health and provide support to ensure the economic survival of workers and businesses if the virus reappears.
The National Organisation for Public Health (EODY) fulfilled its responsibilities during the difficult period of the pandemic, informing, updating and providing guidelines for the public.
However, we mustn't forget that at the present time EODY is focussing on areas where there are new cases of coronavirus. Let's hope it doesn't have to do this in our region - we consider that it will bring the near collapse of our tourism.
It is certain that whatever is deemed necessary will be done scientifically, but visitors will immediately lose their trust and sense of safety. It is not unlikely that the island will be emptied of visitors very quickly.
In this case, the economically difficult winter will be transformed into a nuclear economic holocaust.
Let's not dance on the Titanic. We are all being called to the deck with extreme caution.
These kind of views are usually accompanied by the phrase "which we hope/pray won't happen", but we aren't relying on luck or chance - we say that we must plan and take action to safeguard public health and the economy.
Once again, and especially now when time has become extremely limited, we call on the Mayor to implement the decision of the Municipal Council.
There is no room for latitude or the expectation that help will come from 'somewhere' or by 'good fortune' in the proposals that were approved by the Council.
There is no time for excuses, platitudes and statements without meaning. We have a responsibility.
