The reasons for Lefkimmi Cultural Society President΄s resignation
LEFKIMMI. Another protest rally on Saturday against the operation of the landfill and calling for the removal of riot police from Lefkimmi.
Maria Kontomari handed in her resignation on Wednesday night at a Society meeting. She may not have announced the reasons for her resignation to the media but she did make some statements at the open meeting on Wednesday.
According to people present at the meeting, Ms. Kontomari referred to the other movements being set up in Lefkimmi with the same objective. These organizations don't cooperate with the others - as used to happen when there was a coordinating committee - leading to confusion and counterforces.
The lack of coordination could be seen at the recent protest rally, where the differing views of how things should proceed were overcome only after two hours together at the crossroads.
Other movements, such as the 'Lefkimmi Popular Assembly' and the 'All-Workers Militant Front' (PAME - Communist) work independently from the Lefkimmi Cultural Society.
The board didn't proceed with the election of a new President at Wednesday's meeting, which wouldn't have been easy in the prevailing conditions, but it was decided to organize another protest rally on Saturday 14th against the operation of the landfill and calling for the removal of riot police from Lefkimmi.
