New letter from Vanya Veras: Are you interested in zero waste or not?

BRUSSELS. New letter from Vania Veras to the four Corfu and Paxos Mayors - Please reply by 6 March as there are others who are interested!

The Secretary General of Municipal Waste Europe Vania Veras has repeated her proposal for the drawing up and funding of a zero waste plan for Corfu and Paxos. This time her letter, sent on 21 February, is addressed to the four Corfu and Paxos Mayors and mentions the meeting arranged with Ms Ydraiou's representative Mr. Dimoulis for that reason.

She talks about the European Investment Bank's interest in funding the plan for the two islands interest-free. The repayment of the interest-free loan will come from the returns of the investment itself. The necessary prerequisite is the design of a zero waste management plan for Corfu which will turn it into a model zero waste island in Europe.

In her letter, Ms. Veras has set a two-week deadline for a response from the four Municipal Councils and FODSA (Solid Waste Management Organisation) - Friday 6 March - as an another island, which she doesn't name, has expressed an interest.

She also repeats her proposal for the four Municipalities and FODSA to become members of Municipal Waste Europe, of which she is Secretary General, in order to have access to expertise, save time and money, have access to information about suitable funding tools.

Letter from Vanya Vera, Secretary General of Municipal Waste Europe

Brussels, February 21st 2020

Dear FODSA President & Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Ms.Ydraiou
Dear North Corfu Mayor Mr. Mahimaris
Dear South Corfu Mayor Mr. Lessis
Dear Paxos Mayor Mr. Vlachopoulos
Dear President & Board Members of Waste Watch Corfu

Following my presence at the meeting organised by Waste Watch Corfu in October 2019 and the meeting my authorised representative Konstantinos Maladrinos had with the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor's specialist advisor Viktoras Dimoulis in Brussels on Tuesday 4 February, I would like to inform you with this letter of the following:

There is very serious interest from the European Investment Bank in providing full and immediate funding for a complete implementation programme to transform the region of Corfu and Paxos into a model zero waste island in Europe. At the same time all the modern requirements of the EU 851/2018 Guideline will be implemented.

The final funding plan will be implemented once all sides have drawn up all the special needs and experiences of the area with the agreement of the Municipalities and wider community, of course. The final amount of funding that will be required will be interest-free. Repayments will come from the returns on the work and energy from the zero waste management programme.

I am obliged to tell you that the specific proposal is a happy exception for the European Investment Bank since the usual amounts of money it invests are much larger than that estimated in this specific plan. My own personal interest comes from my occupation in improving waste management and in protecting the environment from human intervention on the one hand and from the great interest shown by the Bank's top management.

I believe that my own unselfish efforts along with the interest from EIB will lead to the resolution of the problem with waste produced on the two islands and I would like to declare my complete support and willingness to be available in the future whenever needed to ensure the success of the plan.

We informed you of the time limit on receiving an initial positive response, bearing in mind the great interest from other European island destinations. We would also like to let you know that there is already another serious candidate with the eligibility criteria considered necessary by both our Organisation and the European Investment Bank based on the community support expressed by the Municipal Councils.

Please let us know without delay of your decision (positive or negative) electronically by Friday 6 March as we cannot wait any longer due to the other aforementioned candidacy.

Your Municipalities and FODSA can in any case become members of Municipal Waste Europe in order to have access to expertise, save time and money, have access to information about suitable funding tools.

We remain at your disposal for any questions you may have.

Kind regards,

Ms. Vanya Veras
Secretary General
Municipal Waste Europe
