CORFU. Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panayiotis Varouchas told the Union of Tourist Guides at a meeting at the Old Town Hall - Request to reopen the Corfu Tourist Guide School from Meropi Ydraiou to Tourism Ministry.

The Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panayiotis Varouchas met with the Ionian Islands & Western Greece Union of Tourist Guides President Magda Kousouni and Vice President Anna Vassilaki at San Giacomo Old Town Hall yesterday.

The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor issued the following press release:

"The President updated the Deputy Mayor on the Union's key issues of concern and they exchanged views on how the island's tourist product can be improved.

Mr. Varouchas stressed the important role that the tourist guides are being asked to play in tourism and expressed his satisfaction with the high level of services provided by the guides in Corfu. He said that professional tourist guides were quite rightly called the country's 'ambassadors' given that they are the ones who promote the merits of a destination, thus contributing to the creation of a positive image.

He went on to say that Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, recognising the vital part that the guides play in the tourist economy, has already requested from the Deputy Minister for Tourism Manos Konsolas that the Corfu School for Tourist Guides be reopened and that research is being carried out to find a municipal building that can be used for that purpose.

Both sides agreed to work together to improve the services offered to visitors. Mr. Varouchas announced that the local authority intended to provide the members of the Union of Tourist Guides with an office in the Municipal Information Centre in the Upper Square which will help improve the quality of tourist information.

Union President Magda Kousouni expressed her satisfaction with this important initiative from the Municipality and proposed the voluntary participation of the Union of Tourist Guides and free provision of services to the Municipality.

Finally, Mr. Varouchas said that the collaboration between the Municipality and the Union of Tourist Guides is an especially significant development for the tourist industry and needs to be supported by all the relevant organisations."
