CORFU. Afra Primary & Nursery Schools Parents and Guardians Association has introduced the global trend for 3D pedestrian crossings to Corfu.

Two of these crossings have been created outside the village Primary School with the help of the icon painter Leonidas Garnavos.

Afra Primary & Nursery Schools PGA Board decided to go ahead with this exciting initiative to improve the locals' everyday life following their recent elections.

Association President Tasos Bouas told Enimerosi that they were inspired to go ahead with this project - the first of its kind in Corfu - after seeing examples of 3D pedestrian crossings recently created abroad and in this country.

"The idea came up and we decided to put it into practice - it is something that our village needs. New pedestrian crossings are needed outside Afra Primary School for the children's safety so when we found out about the 3D crossings we decided that it was a great opportunity to go one step further," Tasos Bouas told Enimerosi and added, "We spoke to a fellow villager who is an icon painter, Leonidas Garnavos, and he was happy to take on the job of painting the 3D crossings. There will be two crossings - one bigger than the other - outside the two school entrances."

The PGA President stressed that they have been collaborating with the local authority and the Municipal Department of Technical Works in order to get the green light to go ahead.

The first crossing is expected to be ready by Saturday afternoon and by the beginning of the week on Monday morning, all being well, Afra residents will also have the second crossing outside the school.

The first 3D pedestrian crossing in Greece was created in Naoussa about a year ago and more recently another was created in Halandri in Athens.

The idea of 3D pedestrian crossings began in India and then spread to the rest of the world including Iceland, who then introduced it to Europe.

Enimerosi wrote an article two weeks ago asking when we would see something like this Corfu - it seems that residents in Afra can now boast that they were the ones to bring this new global trend to the island!
