CORFU. "There΄s an open channel of communication with the Government," South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis told Enimerosi.

Mr. Lessis met with the Waste Management General Secretary Manolis Grafakos last Wednesday and "laid his cards on the table" - listing various issues that require immediate attention from the Government. The new Municipality of South Corfu includes Lefkimmi landfill which contains thousands of tons of waste bales that were taken there from Temploni landfill - with a police escort.

It is not the first time that the South Corfu Mayor has met with the General Secretary and he says that it will not be the last. "There will be other meetings," he said. "We are having discussions and he is listening to what we are requesting: Removal of waste bales and restoration of Lefkimmi landfill; removal of waste from Corfu; funding to purchase waste bins and electro-mechanical equipment; funding to set up transfer stations and Green Spots; set-up of a small composting unit; acquiring family composters for hotel units. I also made it clear that the landfill should not operate."

The General Secretary has been listening seriously to the requests and considers them to be fair, said Mr. Lessis. "He didn't commit himself but the important thing is that there is an open channel of communication," he stressed.
