CORFU. There was a meeting, co-organized by the Municipality and Corfu Chamber of Commerce, at the Corfu Palace Hotel yesterday.

At the meeting was a delegation of tourism professionals from Thessaloniki led by Mayor Yiannis Boutaris.

The purpose of the event, in addition to presenting Thessaloniki as a tourist and business destination, was to exchange know-how in the field of tourism, develop collaboration to strengthen domestic tourism and to encourage the promotion of local products in the Northern Greek market with a view to developing the gastronomical identity of each destination.

The event is part of an initiative from the Municipality of Thessaloniki which began in 2013 called "City Diplomacy", which received an award in 2016 from Greek Hospitality Awards. Similar events have taken place in Istanbul, Sofia, Belgrade, Bucharest, Smirni, Milan, Bologne, Tel Aviv, Cologne, Nicosia, Paris, Vienna as well as in Greece in Kastoria, Ioannina, Naoussa and Kalamata.

The Municipal 'San Giacomo' Choir sang at the event in honour of Mr. Boutaris and his colleagues.

In his welcoming address Corfu Chamber of Commerce President Giorgos Hondroyiannis said, "Corfu Chamber has always encouraged activities that help develop the field of tourism along with the local products of Corfu.

In recent years the Chamber has participated in the Thessaloniki International Fair with its own booth and has twinned with the Thessaloniki Industrial Chamber.

With your cooperation we would like to try to make Corfu the number one destination for school trips once again now that the construction of the Egnatia motorway has made access to our island much easier.

Let us also not forget that Corfu has developed into a significant religious destination - every year large numbers of believers visit the island, which celebrates Easter and Easter Week in its own unique way. Tourism is the main focus of today's meeting and it undoubtedly contributes in a major way to the economic development of the island. So let us cultivate collaborative relations which will benefit our local businesses."
