CORFU. The Local Authority presented its proposal at a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce attended by the Mayor, Deputy Regional Governors and representatives of other bodies.

Yesterday the Municipality carried out the promise it had made at the 2nd Corfu Tourism Conference to set up a Destination Management Organization. It invited those involved in order to present its proposal, with the support of experts who stressed the need for a Corfu Tourism Body.

Mr. Spilanis, Head of the World Tourism Organization Monitoring Centre for sustainable tourism in the North Aegean, insisted that there was a greater need for destination management than for promotion.

Deputy Mayor Vassilis Kavadias presented the Local Authority proposal and talked about the establishment of a Limited Development Company comprising all the relevant organizations and bodies to be funded initially by the Integrated Spatial Investment programme up to the amount of approximately 2m Euros.

Sitting on the panel, along with the two above-mentioned, were the lecturer G. Asonitis from the Central Association of Chambers of Commerce, tourism professional A. Diavatis and G. Galinos, representing the only organization of this type in Greece at the moment - in Athens.

There were positive and cooperative comments from the Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos and the Deputy Regional Governor Spyros Galiatsatos. There were several important and useful comments on the necessity for organized, collaborative planning to ensure that we can function as a popular destination. One of these was from Mr. Spilanis, who said that the Mayor of Milos had been asked if the island could cope with a cruise ship with 6,000 passengers - if the businesses on the island had at least 6,000 bottles of water. The Mayor replied that of course that was possible, but what didn't exist was a way to deal with the 6,000 empty bottles afterwards...

Perhaps this comment makes one think of Corfu...
