CORFU. There was a shocking photo of a patient at Corfu Hospital on the Facebook Page "Your complaints to the Mayor".

There were a series of unfavourable comments under the post. The photo shows a patient at the hospital with head injuries. According to the person who published the post, the patient was neither cared for nor cleaned by hospital staff and in the end two women visitors to the hospital and a Red Cross volunteer offered to help him.

Statement from the Hospital Director

The response of the Hospital Director Phivos Kakavitsas was as follows: "From the first moment the case has been held up by medical order in order to safeguard the patient who suffered from disorientation and crises following the head injury and not because of lack of personnel. Naturally, there will be an administrative enquiry tomorrow (Monday) to throw light on the facts. According to information I have received, there is a danger of the patient injuring himself and for that reason the doctor ordered that he should be restrained. I have been informed that he is cleaned and fed regularly by the nursing staff on duty. In any case, I have referred the matter to an administrative inquiry to investigate if he has been properly looked after.

I repeat that, even if each ward had ten nurses there are situations where, for the patient's own safety, doctors issue orders for restrictions.

Initial information indicates that the specific patient had an exclusive nurse at first. However, it seems that doctors gave orders for things to be halted temporarily even though had an exclusive nurse and a Red Cross volunteer.

It would be best if we waited to see if matters have been handled properly because the way the post has been published doesn't give a true picture of the situation."
